Why is China acting so aggressively regarding COVID?

Question in title: do they know something we don't about the virus? Why would Xi risk his standing with the people by continuung Draconian lockdowns, when the vast majority of the world is back to "normal"? A year ago they were celebrating New Year's with large unmasked gatherings--long before those were considered 'safe' in the US and elsewhere. What changed ? And why?
